The last two weeks have been a little crazy with having 4 snow days! I hope everyone was able to get some rest and maybe even play in the snow. Our weather here in Michigan can sometimes be a bit detrimental to the education process, but we make the best out of it. My econ students just took their unit 2 test yesterday. There ended up being a week delay on it with everything going on. The classes did well, especially considering how much we were in and out of school! These tests had an essay with them and I always let the students know it takes about a week to get them graded and back to them. We are now starting with business structures and organizations. The students will take the unit 3 test right before spring break, which really is not that far away. One of the reasons this unit takes a large amount of time is because the students are just starting a project today that will be turned in on Wednesday March 16th. They have to create a children's book using some of the key economic terms they have already learned this semester.
In social issues we have been talking about health care for the last two weeks and will continue to for about another week. After that we will be moving on to crime and punishment. So many of the topics we discuss in this class are being discussed right now in the political arena with the election coming up in November. It is a really great time to have this class. Next week we have parent teacher conferences. I have every intention of being there, but it is possible that I wont be there due to my pregnancy. I am 34 weeks along today and with twins, 50% of all twins are born before 36 weeks. I have no indication that I will go early, but just as a heads up I wanted to let you know. If you wanted to talk to me about your student please feel free to e-mail me. Econ - Although it was a short week, we did a lot this week. We started with demand and have now moved on to supply. Next week we will be combining the two to create an equilibrium. It is looking like our unit test for unit 2 will be Monday the 29th. The test scores from unit 1 were great and they got those back on Tuesday of this week. I hope the unit 2 scores will reflect a lot of learning and improvement from the pre-test score too!
Social Issues - They are finishing up the education unit with a test today. On Monday we will be moving on to the health care unit. In the unit we will be doing a variety of things, but a lot of it will be based on research about different programs in the US and around the World. Enjoy the warm weather this weekend! Econ - The students did great on their unit 1 post tests! I do not have the written part graded, but the multiple choice and the matching portion were very good. We will be moving on to supply and demand next week on Tuesday. Unit 2 takes about two weeks to get through.
Social Issues - We are still working on our education unit and had a couple of guest speakers this week. The students will be doing a presentation next week and will be taking an education unit test at the end of next week or the beginning of the following week depending on how long it takes to wrap up the presentations. Enjoy your long weekend! This week in economics we continued unit 1 which is going back over and learning the basics of economics. The students are doing well with it so far. I did give the students a review sheet for the unit one test today because the test will be next Friday, 2/12. We do have a half day next Friday and it is an AM schedule. I will see both of my econ classes that day, I have very much enjoyed getting to know the students so far, both groups I have right now participate and seem to be understanding the concepts we are learning. As a side note, I did want to let you all know that I am expecting twins this semester, so there is going to be a period of time where I will be gone for about 8 weeks. I will be doing all of the planning for that time, so the curriculum will still be followed and everything will be set up in advance for the sub.
In social issues we are still working on education and plan to next week as well. We will be having two guest speakers come in, Mr. Volovsek and Mrs. Rybicki, to answer some questions the students had about education. Happy Superbowl weekend, I hope you all enjoy the commercials. The first week has already come to an end! I have had a very nice time getting to know the students. I have great groups again.
This week in economics it was a lot of review over past materials they may have had in past classes and next week we will continue with that, but also start adding in some new information. It is really important in the first unit to make sure all of the students have a solid base of information, so when we move on in the near future, they can understand the material better. Next week we will be focusing on the main economic goals and questions that different types of economies face. We will look at how the different types of economies answer the 3 main economics questions as well. The students will also have an opportunity to look at current data for a few countries and try to tell which type of economic system they belong to. In Social Issues we have spent some time getting to know one another because in this class we are going to spend a lot of time discussing big ideas and topics affecting our country and the world. We started with bias and stereotypes and will be moving into education today. Next week the main focus will be on education, both at the national level and the world level. Social issues is a really great class, but the students have to be willing to participate. My hope is that once we get deeper into the topics they will be excited to discuss them. A new semester has begun! I had great classes last semester and am sure I will again this semester. This semester I am teaching two sections of economics and one section of social issues.
In economics this semester they will be learning about both micro and macro economics. My hope is that they have a better understanding of the world around them by the time they leave this class. Economics is an important part of our everyday life and I hope to help the students will be able to recognize it. I look forward to teaching your students this semester! For me it is very hard to believe that the end of the semester is two weeks away! I have had a wonderful semester and have enjoyed all of my classes very much. With the last two weeks, we are really wrapping up what we have been working on.
For econ we are working on resume's and their perfect job power points right now. We will finish and turn in the resume's on Monday and the power points are going to be due on Wednesday. Every day next week we will also be addressing some personal finance topics, including, savings, credit, debt, taxes, interview questions, strategies for college, etc. They will also be getting their exam review sheets next week too. For US history we will be learning about Presidents, starting with Nixon and continuing on though G.W. Bush. They will have a test on them next Friday. The test will not include an essay. They will also be getting a review sheet next week for the final exam. Final Exams - 1st block (Econ) - Thursday 1/21 3rd block (Econ) - Thursday 1/21 4th block (US History) - Friday 1/22 Both Thursday and Friday are half days of exam week. |
